If you have been advised your central heating needs a power flush,
then this means the circulation of the water within the boiler and radiators has sludge build up and needs to be removed.
The sludge builds up with eventually destroy the boiler and the radiators.
What happens is the sludge starts to eat away at the radiators and also blocks the waterways in the boiler.
When the boiler is trying to heat the water inside, if the water is restricted in its
flow you then get scale starting to form and eventually the
boiler becomes blocked and stops working.
Most of the time a power flush will resolve the problem,
and restore your boiler and radiators back to normal.
When a power flush is carried out it can sometimes remove the sludge that has been
eating away at the radiators, this then can cause a pinhole to appear and a leaking radiator.
The sludge buildup could have been avoided in the first
the place if when the heating or boiler was installed an inhibitor was added to the system water.
The inhibitor protects the system water and stops it turning into sludge.

Another way to avoid having to have a power flush because of sludge is to fit an inline Magna clean.
This is a unit that connects to the return pipe just before it enters the boiler.
The system stills need an inhibitor to be added, but this Magna clean, collect all the small pieces of sludge.
Within the Magna clean a very strong magnet,
again it will need to be checked and cleaned out every year.
If at any time the central heating is drained down for any reason,
then you need to make sure that an inhibitor is added on the refill,
otherwise, you will be having either a power flush or a new system.
Even if you take a radiator off for decorating, the inhibitor will need to be topped up.
If your boiler is one of today’s modern energy-efficient condensing boilers,
then it is very important that an inhibitor has been added.
The reason is that the heat exchanger within the boiler has very narrow waterways, and can easily get blocked with sludge. Once this happens you will find yourself with a very expensive repair bill.
When a new boiler is fitted, if you read the paperwork that came with the boiler, it states that the system needs to be power flush or flushed out depending on how dirty the system may be, then an inhibitor added.
As most of these boilers now come with long guarantees of up to 10 years this is a something that needs to be done, because should the boiler breakdown within the guarantee period, one of the things that get checked is the system water. If they find the system water has sludge in, then the guarantee becomes void, and you then could be changing your boiler.
The water within your central heating is very important if it cannot flow smoothly it puts stress on the pump and the boiler. A clean system will also save you money on your fuel bills. A dirty sludge system will cost you money, not only for the power flush but also your fuel bill.
