can identify any part that may need replacing or even resetting?
If you have a sealed central heating system, meaning you have no tank in the loft to fill you’re heating,
then you will have an expansion vessel fitted somewhere, either externally or within the boiler,
this is a very important part of you’re heating system and needs checking every year.
If this gets overlooked it can cause all sorts of problems,
even right down to replacing your boiler.
One of the most common problems with central heating systems these days is circulation.
The radiators may take a long time to heat up, you may notice your boiler is going
on and off a lot but the radiators are not that hot to touch.
This is all due to circulation, the boiler is overheating because of the water inside cannot flow quick enough.
So what causes this problem? It’s called sludge build up
The reason we get sludge in our heating systems is that the water within reacts with all the different metals that make up our heating system,
you have copper, brass, iron, steel and so on, these all react and the by-product is sludge.
This sludge build up slows the flow of water and also puts pressure on the pump and boiler, both have to work harder to produce the heat we want, at the same time reducing their lifespan.
With the older boilers, the waterways were a lot bigger than the boilers we use today, so the water could flow very quickly even with some sludge build up.
Today’s boilers have very small waterways so needs clean water to run at optimum efficiently, any form of sludge with slow these boilers down in producing the heat we need, and will eventually stop working.
So how do you stop the sludge from forming?
The first thing you need to do is have the central heating system flushed and clean out. When cleaning the system you use a cleaning chemical to break down all the sludge, once it’s all flushed out, you then add an inhibitor to stop the sludge from coming back.
Next, the best thing you can do is to add an inline filter to the system, there are many to choose from, but Magna-clean is the choice of most boiler installers. It has a very strong magnet within that when water passes through it collect all of the iron sludge, you will be amazed at how much it collects on the magnet.
Nobody wants to keep spending money on repairing their central heating so the by having an annual service and fitting a filter you will keep the repairs at bay and lower your fuel bills.
