So why is this, surely all you need is a gas safe registered engineer to service your LPG boiler?
The answer is, not all gas safe engineers are registered to work on LPG appliances.
To be able to work on LPG appliances, the engineers have to sit a different set of exams purely for LPG.
Anyone that is gas safe registered has to sit or complete a reassessment of all their natural gas qualifications every five years. The same goes for LPG
Should they not take the reassessment, they can no longer work on any gas appliance.
So they have to sit one set of exams for natural gas, and another set for LPG.
For the engineer, it’s a costly exercise as well as time-consuming.
Finding a company for your LPG boiler service can be easy if you know how.
Go to the gas safe register, enter all your details, and the register will give you details of three companies local to you.
Whatever you do, don’t use the local handyman for your boiler service, or any form of gas work, unless of course he is registered.
So let’s get back to the LPG boiler service, what’s the difference?
In general, the boilers are the same, they just use a different gas.
Natural gas works on low pressure (20mb) whereas LPG works on higher pressure (37mb)
So what’s involved with a boiler service?
Before any work is carried out, we do a gas tightness test, this is to check no gas leaks are present on the whole gas supply.
If the test proves ok, we then move onto a visual inspection of the boiler. Does it show any signs of distress?
Now we do a flue gas check using a flue gas analyser and record the readings.
The flue check is checking the integrity of the flue as well as the flue gases.
Next, the front cover is removed, again a quick visual inspection, checking for any signs of water leakage.
If required the burner is removed and cleaned, this all depends on the maker’s service procedure.
If the boiler has an expansion vessel fitted, it is checked to ensure it is set to correct pressure.
Condensing boilers have a condense trap fitted, this is cleaned out and refilled with water.
Once all the internal checks have been completed, another gas tightness test is carried out.
We now move on to checking the gas operating pressure. This is to ensure that when the boiler is working it is getting enough gas.
Another flue gas check is then carried out and compared to the first reading. If the reading is ok, all is good.
Sometimes the gas valve may need calibrating to bring it back to 100%.
A boiler service certificate is then issued to the customer.
The boiler service is mainly about safety, ensuring it is of no danger to the user.
